What is Mentor Coaching?
According to the ICF definition:
Mentor Coaching means that the individual is being coached on their coaching skills rather than on practice building, life balance or other topics unrelated to the development of an individual’s coaching skills.
How do I select a Mentor Coach?
The ICF has created a list of Mentor Coaching duties and competencies and Mentor Coaches must have held their credential for a minimum of three (3) years. The Heart and Soul of a Mentor Coach is also a great summary of the traits and experiences you should look for in an effective Mentor Coach.
Mentor Coaching for an ICF Credential
In setting high global standards for professional coaching, ICF’s credentialing system requires each applicant to partner with a Mentor Coach. Information about mentor coaching for an ICF credential can be accessed on the ICF website.
Mentor Coaching for ICF Credential Renewal
Please note that the following information is correct as at August 2019.
As an ICF Associate Certified Coach you may already know that for renewal you will require 40 hours of Continuing Coach Education (CCE) to be completed in the three years since the initial award of your credential, or since your last credential renewal … but did you know that up to 10 hours of Mentor Coaching can be counted toward the 40 hours of CCE? That means your 40 hours of CCE can comprise:
- 10 hours of Mentor Coaching (counting as Core Competencies)
- A further 30 hours of CCE, including:
- 3 hours in Coaching Ethics (counting toward Core Competencies)
- at least 11 hours in Core Competencies
- remaining hours in Resource Development
- No more than 10 hours of Coaching Supervision (delivering and/or receiving) may be counted toward Continuing Coach Education requirements.
Further information about Continuing Professional Development (CPD) – including information about what can be counted as Core Competencies and what is counted as Resource Development – is available on the ICF website.
